چکیده

Much like the Cornucopia myth of the 19th and early 20th centuries, MSY as a management tool simply won’t go away, regardless of evidence that managing for MSY has not been effective. Consequently, we investigate Ricker’s definition of MSY, focusing on words such as average catch, continuously taken, and existing environmental conditions. To do this, we develop a model for the squid fishery in California; this is probably the last great open access fishery on the west coast of the US. By constructing the model in a step-wise fashion, one is able to illustrate particular points. Insight from the model leads to a deeper understanding of the definition of MSY, particularly that different methods of averaging and explicitly including risk to the stock in MSY may allow MSY to be used in the context of precautionary fishery management. Finally, we summarize results from the Third Mote Symposium that also shed light on this issue. Introduction In his classic book, Ricker (1975) defined MSY: MAXIMUM SUSTAINABLE YIELD (MSY OR YS): The largest average catch or yield that can continuously be taken from a stock under existing environmental conditions. (For species with fluctuating recruitment, the maximum might be obtained by taking fewer fish in some years than in others). (Italics added and understanding the full implications of these words is the point of this paper). However, two years later, Peter Larkin (1977) proposed that we bury MSY: "An epitaph for the concept of Maximum Sustained Yield"

Scup : Stock Assessment and Biological Reference Points for 2008

Scup 293 Executive Summary The current biomass reference point for scup relies on the index of Spawning Stock Biomass (SSB) from the NEFSC spring trawl survey. Previous reviews of the stock assessment have indicated that while this index may be the most reliable fishery independent index of scup SSB, it is subject to a relatively high degree of inter-annual variability that reduces its utility ...

Predicting grass dry matter intake, milk yield and milk fat and protein yield of spring calving grazing dairy cows during the grazing season.

Predicting the grass dry matter intake (GDMI), milk yield (MY) or milk fat and protein yield (milk solids yield (MSY)) of the grazing dairy herd is difficult. Decisions with regard to grazing management are based on guesstimates of the GDMI of the herd, yet GDMI is a critical factor influencing MY and MSY. A data set containing animal, sward, grazing management and concentrate supplementation v...

Unpacking “Health Reform” and “Policy Capacity”; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”

Health reform is the outcome of dispersed policy initiatives in different sectors, at different levels and across time. Policy work which can drive coherent health reform needs to operate across the governance structures as well as the institutions that comprise healthcare systems. Building policy capacity to support health reform calls for clarity regarding the nature of such policy work and t...

Male-specific region of the bovine Y chromosome is gene rich with a high transcriptomic activity in testis development.

The male-specific region of the mammalian Y chromosome (MSY) contains clusters of genes essential for male reproduction. The highly repetitive and degenerative nature of the Y chromosome impedes genomic and transcriptomic characterization. Although the Y chromosome sequence is available for the human, chimpanzee, and macaque, little is known about the annotation and transcriptome of nonprimate ...

Human impacts on the rates of recent, present, and future bird extinctions.

Unqualified, the statement that approximately 1.3% of the approximately 10,000 presently known bird species have become extinct since A.D. 1500 yields an estimate of approximately 26 extinctions per million species per year (or 26 E/MSY). This is higher than the benchmark rate of approximately 1 E/MSY before human impacts, but is a serious underestimate. First, Polynesian expansion across the P...
